A recent study on real AI assistant usage found something uncomfortable: nearly half of all conversations are just questions, people using a language model as a search engine with better prose. That’s not wrong, but it’s a tiny fraction of what the technology can already do.
The difference between a chat and an agent isn’t the size of the model underneath. It’s what happens after it answers. A chat gives you text and waits for the next question. An agent takes an assignment, pulls what it needs from your real context, drafts or executes, and only comes back to you when there’s something to approve. The first time someone delegates “prep yesterday’s meeting follow-up” and gets back a draft with real names, dates and agreements (not a generic template), they get the difference in a second.
The dominant misunderstanding is “isn’t this just ChatGPT?” No, because ChatGPT doesn’t have your memory, doesn’t know what happened in Tuesday’s meeting, and can’t touch anything outside the chat window. An agent can. And that changes what’s worth asking it for.
